Holiday Food Basics

During the holidays, there’s always an abundance of feasting with friends and family. By sticking with the following tips, you can curb the excess weight gain that always seems to crop up around this time of year.

Eat whole foods over processed foods, they are more nutrient dense.

Eat high quality protein with every meal.

Eat more healthy fats such as Omega 3’s. Eat less or better yet, no trans-fats.

Learn the difference between fibrous carbohydrates, complex carbohydrates and simple carbohydrates.

Get most of your carbohydrates from veggies and fruits (in that order).

Eat the right kind of carbohydrates at the right time (fibrous carbohydrates over all others when possible).

Ingest all other carbohydrates (simple or complex) post-workout; your body will use them better.

Eat more fiber.

Learn to read labels and critically analyze them.

Sound nutrition is the best method of losing body fat, increasing metabolism and buoying energy levels.

This is the best foundation for healthy living.

Educate yourself; it will go a long way.

To your health.

Female Training Myths Exposed: 1

From the previous post about female training myths, what was your answer?

For many of the women I’ve worked with in the past, what went wrong?

These women followed some of the most out-dated exercise advice available or they fell for the marketing gimmicks and empty promises. They wanted the easy way out.

Many of these fallacies have been propagated from one person to the next until they take on the weight of truth.

In fact, some of these nuggets of gym lore have even been passed on by purported experts in exercise such as personal trainers or therapists, thus falsely adding to their credibility!

In this series of posts, I’ll take you through some of the biggest exercise myths that affect women and how to reach your fitness goal by going against what may seem intuitive.

Read on and overcome these common exercise myths that are stopping you from achieving the body of your dreams.

Myth: Losing weight and losing body fat is the same thing, so check the scale often.

Fact: The act of stepping on a scale and measuring the pull of gravity is a ritual that many women undertake on an almost daily basis. For most women, losing weight is considered the same as losing body fat. If the scale drops, then the exercise or diet program is considered a success.

In some cases, this may be an appropriate objective measure. In most cases, however, this is a step in the wrong direction.

A better method of obtaining objective body measures is to gauge how your clothing fits: Is your dress size down? Do you pants feel looser? Do your tops feel less restrictive?

This will take in to consideration any healthy and important increases in lean body mass that you may have made.

When using a scale, there is no differentiation between adding precious fat-burning muscle while losing non-functional body fat. This leads to “false” appearance of often disappointing numbers on the scale, which don’t reflect true progress.

Common Female Training Myths-Exposed!

What do most women hope for when starting a new fitness program?

The ultimate goal for the majority of female clients I’ve had the pleasure of working with was to lose weight and inches!

10 lbs. 15 lbs. Even 30 lbs or more.

The underlying motivation is usually to fit into their favorite pair of jeans, which now hides in the back of their closet. Or they need to make that grand entrance at a wedding or fancy gala.

Who doesn’t want to look stunning as they walk down the aisle, with all those eyes on them?

Perhaps it’s reunion season. Ten or twenty years can sure take its toll!

Many times an upcoming tropical vacation invokes instant panic and a deep sense of shame and disgust at the thought of wearing a bikini or another similarly revealing outfit on the beach.

A sudden realization of past fitness and nutritional transgressions surges to the forefront: “is it too late to look good?”

Sound familiar?

Unfortunately, I’ve seen too many women on a crash course toward exercise failure before they even begin their new program.

How is that possible you ask?

These women are the same ones who have read articles in every major women’s fitness magazine and have large networks of friends who are in the same boat.

They’ve hired personal trainers and joined every possible type of gym out there. They’ve circuit trained and ab-crunched until they were red in the face- and the pocketbook!

Some even compromised their health with starvation for that elusive Holy Grail: weight loss.

All these women have one thing in common. After all that wasted time, money and effort, they still haven’t achieved what they were looking for.

Ask yourself: “Am I one of them?”

Follow along in this series of posts as I outline some of the biggest myths that affect women in their search for their ultimate body.
